The Feast of Varak and the Youth

On the Armenian Church calendar, the Feast of the Cross of Varak holds a special place. Two weeks after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Armenian Church commemorates the discovery of the relics of the true Cross on Mount Varak in the 7th century. What might seem like an ancient celebration, carries a living message for every generation, even for the youth of today.

A story which is rooted in faith, tell us that according to tradition, two of St. Hripsime’s disciples discovered relics of the Holy Cross hidden on Mount Varak. This was more than a historical event, as it was a revelation of God’s presence within the Armenian homeland. Since then, Armenians have celebrated this feast as a reminder that faith is not distant, but near, woven into the very story of our people.

So why does this feast matter to us today?

First is a symbol of hope and strength, the Cross is the sign of victory through struggle. For youth facing the pressures of school, work, and an uncertain future, the story of Varak reminds us that hope can be rediscovered even in difficult times.

Second is a connection to our heritage, Varaka Khach is uniquely Armenian. For young Armenians, especially in the diaspora, this feast reminds us that our identity is sacred and worth cherishing. It is both faith and heritage united in one celebration.

Third is a call to love and service, the Cross of Jesus Christ is not only about suffering, it’s about sacrificial love. In a world that often encourages self interest, the message of Varak challenges us to serve others with generosity, humility, and care.

Finally, it’s a journey of discovery, just as the relics were hidden in the earlier times and later found, each of us is on a journey to uncover deeper meaning in our lives. Today Varaka Khatch encourages us as youth to search for God’s presence in our daily lives.

The Feast of the Cross of Varak is not just for scholars or historians, but it belongs to every believer. It speaks to the 14 year old seeking identity, the young adult searching for purpose, and the parent striving to pass down faith to their child. Its message is timeless, the Cross brings with it hope, it connects us to our roots, calls us to love, and leads us to discover God’s presence in our lives.

May this year’s celebration of the Cross of Varak inspire all of us, young and old, to live with renewed faith and courage, carrying the message of Christ’s love into the world.
