Mid-Lent Week and the Feast of the Lanterns

As we continue our Lenten journey, Mid-Lent Week, or Michink, invites us to pause, reflect, and renew our spiritual strength. In the Armenian Church, Michink marks the midpoint of Great Lent, falling on the 24th day, the Wednesday of the fourth week. Though it is not one of the major feast days of the Church, it has long been cherished as a meaningful reminder to persevere in prayer, fasting, repentance, and spiritual renewal as we move prayerfully toward the joy of Christ’s Resurrection. It is also a valuable time for our youth to deepen their connection to the life of the Church by participating in worship, learning the meaning of Lent, and growing in faith and commitment as members of our Christian family.

The Feast of the Lanterns, known as Diarentarach, is one of the most beloved celebrations of the Armenian Church. It commemorates the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple and is beautifully marked by light, candles, and joyful procession. In this sacred tradition, the light shared from the altar symbolizes Christ, the Light of the World, who comes to illumine our hearts, our homes, and our path in life. The bonfire and candlelight procession further remind us of our calling to receive His light and to carry it faithfully into the world around us.

Together, these sacred observances remind us that the Christian life is both a journey of repentance and a witness to divine light. Mid-Lent encourages us not to grow weary in our spiritual efforts, while Diarentarach calls us to welcome Christ ever more fully into our lives. May these holy days inspire every member of our parish family, especially our youth, to walk forward with renewed faith, hope, and love.
