Happy Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak
What is this feast?

The Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak (Վարագայ Սուրբ Խաչի Տօն) is a special feast of the Armenian Apostolic Church, traditionally celebrated on the Sunday nearest September 28.
It commemorates the miraculous appearance of a relic of the True Cross at Varagavank Monastery, near Van, in historic Armenia.
According to Armenian tradition, the relic was brought to Armenia by Saint Hripsime and later entrusted to the monastery at Varak. In the 7th century, during the time of Catholicos Nerses III, a miraculous light appeared over Mount Varak, and a fragment of the Holy Cross was revealed. The monastery subsequently became an important center of Armenian Christianity.
Why is it significant?
The feast is especially associated with:
1. The Holy Cross – the central symbol of Christ’s Passion, death, and Resurrection.
2. Varakavank – the historic monastery where the relic was venerated.
3. The Armenian Christian heritage of Vaspurakan – particularly the region around Lake Van.
4. Hope and spiritual renewal – the Cross is understood not simply as an instrument of suffering, but as the sign of Christ’s victory and new life.
There are actually five major feasts of the Holy Cross in the Armenian liturgical calendar, and Varak is one of them. It is distinctive because it commemorates a particular Armenian tradition concerning the True Cross and its miraculous manifestation at Varak.
