ECUMENICAL PRAYER FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

OTTAWA, September 25, 2026 — An ecumenical prayer service dedicated to peace in the Middle East was held on Saturday, September 25, 2026, at Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ottawa. The gathering brought together Christian leaders, clergy, diplomats, and representatives of various communities in a shared prayer for peace, reconciliation, and solidarity with the peoples of the Middle East.

The service was organized by the Alliance of Middle-Eastern Christians, the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA Canada), and the Fondation Bisonnette pour la Terre Sainte.

His Eminence Archbishop Papken Tcharian, Prelate of the Armenian Prelacy of Canada, attended the service, accompanied by Very Rev. Fr. Hagop Yaacoubian, Assistant to the Prelate.

His Grace Archbishop Marcel Damphousse, Archbishop of Ottawa-Cornwall, presided over the Divine Liturgy and the gathering.

Among the Church leaders in attendance were His Grace Archbishop Ivan Jurkovič, Apostolic Nuncio to Canada; His Grace Bishop Paul-Marwan Tabet, Eparch of the Maronite Catholic Eparchy of Saint Maron of Montreal; His Grace Bishop Boulos, Primate of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Ottawa, Montreal and the Eastern Canada; His Grace Bishop Robert Jarjis, Eparch of the Chaldean Catholic Church; and Rev. Fr. Davit Margaryan, Pastor of St. Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church of Ottawa, along with clergy and representatives of various Christian communities.

The gathering was also attended by government and diplomatic representatives, including the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada; Her Excellency Anahit Harutyunyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Canada; His Excellency Bachir Tawk, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lebanon to Canada; as well as ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, and Egypt.

The ecumenical gathering offered a meaningful witness of Christian unity and solidarity at a time when the peoples of the Middle East continue to endure the consequences of conflict, displacement, and instability. Through common prayer, the participating Churches renewed their hope for an end to violence and for a future founded upon justice, reconciliation, and respect for human life and dignity.

May the peace, harmony, and love that radiate from Bethlehem extend throughout the Middle East and across the entire world.
